Funeral cover explained: premiums, waiting periods and payouts
How funeral policy premiums, waiting periods and 48-hour payouts actually work in South Africa.

A South African funeral costs between R25 000 and R80 000 once the service, catering, transport and tombstone are counted. Funeral cover exists to put that cash in a family member's hands within 48 hours — long before a life policy or estate settles. It is small, fast, unglamorous cover, and the details of the waiting period matter more than the brand.
What funeral cover is and is not
Funeral cover is a small lump sum, usually R10 000 to R100 000, paid within one to two working days of a valid claim and a certified death certificate. It is not a substitute for life insurance: it settles the funeral, not the bond, the school fees or the household budget.
Waiting periods are the fine print that matters
Almost every South African funeral policy applies waiting periods, and they differ by cause of death.
- Natural death — typically a 6-month waiting period, sometimes 12 for older extended-family members.
- Accidental death — usually covered from day one, or from first premium receipt.
- Suicide — commonly excluded for 12 to 24 months.
- Transferring an existing policy — many insurers will waive the wait if you show 6+ months of unbroken cover elsewhere.
Single, family and extended-family plans
A family plan covers the main member, spouse and children under one premium — usually the cheapest cover per person. Extended-family cover adds parents, in-laws and siblings at an additional premium priced by their age. Watch the child cover limits: payouts for children under 14 are capped by regulation.
Cover for parents and older members
Most insurers accept new members up to age 65, with a handful going to 75 or 84 with no medical underwriting. Premiums rise sharply after 60 and waiting periods lengthen. If you are covering parents, check the maximum entry age, whether premiums escalate annually, and whether cover ceases at a certain age — some policies stop paying at 85 while still collecting premiums.
How to compare funeral policies
Compare rand of cover per rand of premium at the same age band, then compare waiting periods, escalation rates, the claims turnaround promise, and whether the payout is cash or a service voucher. Cash gives the family choice; a service-based plan can be better value if you want the burial arranged for you.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does funeral cover cost in South Africa?
- R10 000 of family cover typically costs R50 to R120 a month, while R50 000 of extended-family cover generally runs between R200 and R500 depending on the ages of the members included.
- How quickly is a funeral claim paid?
- Most South African insurers commit to paying a valid claim within 48 hours of receiving the certified death certificate, the BI-1663 form and the claimant's ID.
- Can I have more than one funeral policy?
- Yes. Multiple funeral policies are legal and each pays out independently, which is why many households hold one policy for the immediate family and another covering parents.
- What happens if I miss a premium?
- Most policies allow a 15 to 30 day grace period. Beyond that the policy lapses, and reinstating it usually restarts the waiting period from scratch.
