Schengen-compliant travel insurance for South Africans

What European visa applications require from your travel policy, and how to choose the right cover.

A Schengen visa application is refused without compliant travel insurance, and the requirements are specific enough that a generic policy often fails. If you are applying from South Africa, the certificate matters as much as the cover.

The Schengen minimum requirements

Every Schengen consulate requires all four of these on the certificate.

  • Minimum medical cover of €30 000 (roughly R600 000, check the current rate).
  • Repatriation of remains and emergency medical evacuation included.
  • Valid in all Schengen member states, not only the country you are visiting.
  • Covering the full duration of the trip, ideally with a few days' buffer either side.

What else a good policy covers

Beyond the visa minimum, the benefits South Africans claim on most are trip cancellation and curtailment, baggage loss and delay, missed connections, and personal liability. Cancellation cover is the one most often skipped and most often needed.

Credit card travel insurance is usually not enough

Many South African credit cards include basic travel cover, but it commonly falls short on Schengen requirements — the certificate lacks the required wording, cover is capped below €30 000, or it activates only if the full fare was paid on that card. Request the certificate in writing and check it line by line before relying on it.

Single trip or annual multi-trip

If you travel internationally more than twice a year, annual multi-trip cover is almost always cheaper than buying single-trip policies each time. Check the maximum trip length per journey — usually 30, 60 or 90 days — and the age limits, which tighten sharply after 70.

Declare pre-existing conditions

Undeclared medical conditions are the leading cause of rejected travel claims. Declaring a controlled condition usually costs a modest premium loading; not declaring it can void the entire policy at the moment you need an evacuation.

Frequently asked questions

How much travel insurance do I need for a Schengen visa?
A minimum of €30 000 in medical cover, valid across all Schengen states, including repatriation of remains and emergency medical evacuation for the full duration of the trip.
How much does travel insurance cost from South Africa?
A single-trip European policy for a healthy adult typically costs R400 to R1 200 for two weeks, while annual multi-trip cover generally starts around R1 800.
Does my credit card travel insurance meet Schengen rules?
Often not. Check that the certificate states €30 000 medical cover, repatriation and Schengen-wide validity, and confirm any requirement that the trip be paid for on that card.
Can I buy travel insurance after booking my flights?
Yes, and you can buy it right up to departure — but cancellation cover only responds to events occurring after the policy starts, so buying at booking gives the most protection.
